Long Island 9/11 Memorial Ceremonies (2022)

This week, communities across Long Island will gather at 9/11 memorial ceremonies to honor those who died 21 years ago in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Here are some taking place in townships on Long Island.

Long Island 9/11 Memorial Ceremonies 2022

TOWN OF OYSTER BAY

A remembrance ceremony will feature music, religious readings, a light tribute, and a reading of the names inscribed on the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 wall. It will also include the unveiling of new names added to the wall for those who have died from 9/11-related illnesses. Tobay Beach. oysterbaytown.com. 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

TOWN OF HUNTINGTON

The Town of Huntington and the Huntington Veterans Advisory Board invite residents to their 9/11 memorial for the annual service remembering those who lost their lives that tragic day. Heckscher Park, Prime Avenue and Main Street, Huntington. For more information, email crocco@huntingtonny.gov 12 p.m. Sept. 10.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD

Join the Town of Hempstead for its annual, sunrise Patriot Day memorial service. There will be speakers, musical tributes, and a casting of carnations into the Atlantic. The keynote speaker will be Phil Alvarez, brother of Luis Alvarez, a New York City police detective who died of 9/11-related cancer just weeks after addressing Congress to implore lawmakers to fund the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Residents are asked to bring chairs or blankets to sit on, as space will be limited. Residents are also invited to walk through the Memorial Park and to visit the Remembrance Wall. TOWN OF NORTH HEMPSTEAD

A morning memorial service will honor 56 Town of North Hempstead residents who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Last year, the town unveiled a monument that features a 19-foot-long steel beam from the World Trade Center. TOWN OF ISLIP

Help honor the 90 Islip residents who died in the 9/11 attacks at this memorial service. Veterans Memorial Park, Islip Town Hall, 655 Main St., Islip. Islipny.gov. 11 a.m. Sept. 11.

TOWN OF BABYLON

Join the Town of Babylon and the Town of Babylon Fire Chief’s Association for a 9/11 memorial service that will include a reading of the names of 48 Babylon residents who died in the tragic terrorist attacks.
